Andhra police continue probe against TV channels

Hyderabad, Jan 9 : Continuing the probe against Telugu television channels which aired an unsubstantiated story about an alleged conspiracy behind the death of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the police here Saturday seized hard disks, CDs and other material from the office of the Sakshi channel.

A day after arresting two editors of TV 5, which was first to air the story, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) conducted a probe against Sakshi, owned by Rajasekhara Reddy's son and Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

A team of CID officials spent more than two hours Sturday night at the Sakshi office gathering evidence against the channel but left without arresting anybody. The investigating team seized hard disks, CDs, a printout of the web page of a Russian tabloid and a list of employees.

The CID officials spoke to Sakshi CEO Priyadarshini Ram about the story, even as the channel scribes held placards to protest against the police action, terming it an attack on press freedom.

Like TV 5, Sakshi and another channel, NTV, have been booked by the police for airing the story based on the report of a Russian website.

The report sparked violence in the state and attacks on Reliance stores Thursday night as it alleged that the company had a role in the helicopter crash that killed YSR on Sep 2 last year.

Cases under sections 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 505 (2) (making statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 16 of the Cable TV Networks Regulation Act, 1995, were registered against all the three TV channels, police said.

Ram later told reporters that the government was trying to be tough with media for disseminating information to people. "Why has the government failed to take action when the report was there on the Russian website for the last four months?" he asked.

Journalists Saturday staged protests against the arrests of two editors of TV 5.

Police arrested dozens of mediapersons who staged a demonstration here. Indian Journalists Union Secretary Srinivas Reddy met Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and lodged a protest with him.

"We condemn the arrests of the two editors. While they are available for any probe, the police are treating them like criminals by arresting them and keeping them in custody throughout the night," Srinivas told reporters.

The CID Friday night arrested TV 5 executive editor Brahmananda Reddy and input editor Venkat Krishna for airing the story.

Director General of Police R.R. Girish Kumar said 114 cases were registered and 289 people were arrested in connection with the attacks on Reliance outlets and properties.

He said some news channels telecast the story based on a publication in a foreign website of "doubtful veracity, without verifying its credentials or the credibility of the information".

Meanwhile, a police officer in Anantapur town, Narsingappa, was suspended for failing to protect a Reliance outlet when a mob attacked it.

The state Congress leadership has also issued a show cause notice to National Students Union of India (NSUI) state president Vamshichand Reddy, who allegedly sent an SMS to NSUI workers to attack Reliance outlets after TV channels aired the story.

Reliance attack: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee issues showcause notice to NSUI leader

Hyderabad, Jan 9 : Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President D Srinivas today issued a showcause notice to former National Students Union of India (NSUI) State President Vamshi Chand Reddy in connection with 'provocative' SMS message on Thursday night which had led to attacks on outlets of India's top corporate house.

It may be noted that after some regional television channels on Thursday night telecast a Russian Portal's expose alleging conspiracy behind the helicopter crash on September 2 last year, supporters, claiming to be that of ''Jagan Yuvasena'' and ''YSR Yuvasena,'' went on a rampage, attacking outlets of Reliance Group of companies.

In the showcause notice, a copy of which was released to the press here, Mr Srinivas referred to media reports today alleging that a provocative message, containing ''Attack all Reliance outlets in protest against their hand in the air accident of our beloved leader YSR. Jai YSR. Ch Vamshi Chand Reddy,'' was sent out at 2123 hrs on January 7.

Mr Srinivas said ''those news clippings also carry a facsimile of note issued by service provider, which indicates that you as State President, NSUI, with client name as Vamshi, are holding the SMS account : BA-Youth with mobile numbers 9949776677 and 9490116751''.

Mr Srinivas asked him to explain within three days, from the date of receipt of the notice, why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
Hyderabad, Jan 9 : Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister N Raghuveera Reddy today denied Opposition TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu's charge that the attacks on Reliance group outlets were 'engineered by supporters of Congress Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy to oust Chief Minister K Rosaiah from power.' 'Though not justifying the attacks, I feel that they were emotional outbursts after television channels suggested conspiracy behind the helicopter crash that killed then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy,' he told a press conference at the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) office.

''All ministers are working in a cohesive manner under the leadership of the Chief Minister and taking all steps to maintain law and order and to allay the fears of all, including industries,'' he said.

Even he had expressed doubts whether the crash was a mishap or any conspiracy was there behind it and had impressed upon the Chief Minister to go for a two-member expert probe. He had also asked the Centre to order a CBI probe. ''The CBI is on the job.

All should wait for investigation to be over,'' he added.

Accusing Mr Naidu of behaving like a spokesman for the corporate group, he wanted to know why Mr Naidu did not even make an appeal when the state was burning following pro-Telangana and pro-united Andhra Pradesh stirs, affecting over eight crore people.

Referring to the ouster of then Chief Minister N T Rama Rao by Mr Naidu, the Minister sarcastically said, ''it is Mr Naidu who knows the art of staging political coup very well.'' It was the TDP which had instigated violence in the state after the murder of TDP legislator Parital Ravi, he alleged.

Hailing both print and electronic media for their coverage of news, he said they should keep in mind their ''social responsibility''.

After some regional television channels on Thursday night telecast a Russian Portal's expose alleging conspiracy behind the helicopter crash on September 2 last year, supporters, claiming to be that of ''Jagan Yuvasena'' and ''YSR Yuvasena'', went on a rampage, attacking outlets of Reliance Group of companies.

Journalists protest arrest of mediapersons

Hyderabad, Jan 9 : A delegation of journalists today called on Chief Minister K Rosaiah and registered their protest against the arrest of two editors of a private Telugu satellite channel in the wake of Thursday night's telecast alleging involvement of India's top corporate house in the conspiracy behind the death of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, which led to large-scale violence and destruction of properties.

Talking to newspersons after seeking the Chief Minister's intervention on the issue, Indian Journalists Union (IJU) Secretary General Srinivas Reddy condemned last night's arrest of the two journalists when they were very much available for the whole day for questioning.

He objected to the confinement of private Television Channel Executive Editor Brahmananda Reddy and Input Editor Venkata Krishna the whole night.

On a call given by the IJU-affiliated Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists, protest marches, motorcycle rallies and dharnas were organised in different parts of the State in protest against police ''repression''.

Police had registered a case under IPC sections 153 A (causing disharmony) and 503 (2)(causing enmity among communities and class of the people) against the television channel for its ''defamatory news'' on the basis of a report in a Russian Portal on September 3, hinting at possible conspiracy involving Reliance group of companies behind the September 2 helicopter crash that killed YSR.

Cases were also registered against two more Telugu channels under same sections of IPC at the Punjagutta police station.

TV channel editors arrested for inciting violence

Hyderabad, Jan 8 : Andhra Pradesh police Friday night arrested two editors of Telugu television channel TV 5 for airing a "baseless and malicious" report about an alleged conspiracy behind the death of the then chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a chopper crash last year. The report sparked violence in the state and attacks on Reliance stores.Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested TV 5's executive editor Brahmananda Reddy and input editor Venkat Krishna.

There was mild tension at the channel's office as other employees tried to resist the arrests.

The arrests were made hours after police booked cases against the channel for airing the story based on a report on a Russian website.

Cases under sections 153/3A (provocation with intent to cause riot) and 502 A (sale of printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter) were registered at Jubilee Hills police station here, police said.

Police also booked cases against two more vernacular channels for airing the "baseless" story.

Earlier, the government handed over the investigations against the channels to CID.

The report led to a series of attacks on Reliance stores throughout the state, since it had alleged a role by the company in the helicopter crash that killed YSR.

The police have booked 96 cases and arrested 185 people for the attacks on properties of both Reliance groups.

Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy told reporters that the government would deal firmly with anyone breaking the law.

She said that Chief Minister K. Rosaiah spoke to Home Minister P. Chidambaram over telephone and asked him to speed up the probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the crash.

Police chief Girish Kumar warned that stern action would be taken against those indulging in violence. Prohibitory orders against assembly of people have been imposed in the state in view of the shutdown called by loyalists of the late chief minister in some districts.

He said investigations into the Sep 2 helicopter crash were continuing and appealed to people not to believe rumours.

YSR's son and Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy appealed to people not to resort to violence.

Meanwhile, leaders cutting across party lines condemned attacks on Reliance outlets and called for immediate steps to control television channels to prevent such incidents.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the attacks on Reliance outlets were "pre-planned".

State Congress chief D. Srinivas also condemned the mob violence and clarified that the party had no role in these incidents.

He said party leaders would now have to take permission from him before participating in debates on television.

Editors Guild condemns Andhra channels for 'malicious' broadcasts

New Delhi, Jan 8 : The Editors Guild of India Friday expressed concern at some news channels' unsubstantiated reports about the circumstances leading to the death of the then Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a chopper crash.

"Such reporting is sensational in nature and goes against the basic ethics, standards and principles of journalism. That such reporting triggered some violence in certain parts of Andhra Pradesh is highly unfortunate," the Guild said in a statement.

Andhra Pradesh police have registered cases against owners of the Telugu TV channel TV 5 for airing a "baseless and malicious" report about an alleged conspiracy behind Reddy's death in a chopper crash last year. The report sparked violence in Andhra Pradesh and attacks on Reliance stores.

The TV 5 story was based on a report on a Russian website that alleged the Ambani brothers were behind the helicopter crash in which the chief minister was killed on Sep 2 last year.

Police said notices would also be issued to other TV channels that aired the story after TV 5 began telecasting the report Thursday night.

"It may be pertinent to reiterate that news organisations should exercise all possible rigour and cross-checking of facts, source and motivation of the information before disseminating it in public," the Guild said.

In a separate statement, the Broadcast Editors' Association said airing of an "unsubstantiated and unverified" story by channels defied all well-laid norms and principles of journalism.
